Milestone #1 Met!!!!!!!

"The person who starts the race is not the same person who finishes the race"

On June 4th of this year I set a major goal of completing an Ironman distance triathlon before I am 50 years old in my bid to become a healthier husband and dad.  I also developed a plan with lots of intermediate goals to get there.  Yesterday I met my first Goal on the list!!! I completed the Tulsa Run 5K.

Crossing the finish line with my little sis!  Thanks for pushing me!

My plan going into the race was to jog the first 15 minutes then walk 2 mins and run 5 mins to the last kilometer then jog the rest of the way in, finishing in less than 50 minutes.

I ran the first 16 minutes then maintained the 2/5 pattern, but the long hill at the end got me and we followed a  2/3 pattern from 3.5 kilometers to 4.5 kilometers.  We did pick it up the last 3 blocks finishing with and official time of 49:56.  My Runkeeper app had us finishing in 49:38 and we stopped for 20 or 30 seconds to take a rock out of my shoe.  When I finished I could stop smiling!  I was changed.  I am ready to train harder for the next 5k and see how much I can improve.  This race was the first time I finished in a sub 16 min/mi pace.  I will attempt to break 15 minute/mi pace in my next race.

This weekend was a great ending to a great busy week.  I got a lot of swimming in as well despite the busy schedule.  I failed to weigh in this week, but I feel great.

I will be adding the quote above and the following to my truck window this week!

Here is my week:

Weekly Check In Aug 10 and 50% More!

50% more.  That is how much I added to my Saturday swim.  I totes did it ya'll (the preteen is wearing off on me), I swam 50 laps = 2500 meters = 1.5 miles! I actually felt strong until the last 400 m.  I am feeling it this morning though! Lats and triceps are sore! But guess what? That my friends is longer than a half Ironman swim.

My Usual Saturday Morning Haunt!

This feat got me to thinking.  Where else in my life could I give 50% more.  50% more dad, 50% more teacher, 50% more husband 50% more christian.  If even for a day each week, if I gave 50% more to some aspect of my life how much richer would my life and the life of those around me be?  If everyone in the world did the same what kind of world would we live in?  So I challenge you this week to push yourself a little further than you thought you could go.  Be it exercise, be it work, be it family and friends. Find some aspect of your life and give 50% more!!!  See how it effects you and yours! Then come back and tell me what you did.

My week was good.  I lowered my workout volume during the week to let me body recover some.  Based on how I feel now, well at least going into my Saturday swim,  I think it was a smart move.  This week, with the start of school I will probably kick the level up a little and then put the hammer down starting again next week.  I have also got to clean up my diet a some.  The schools and fast food places fed me too well this week.  It was a total lack of planning and morning laziness on my part.  How much I ate wasn't bad, but what I ate was horrible.  I will monitor and adjust.  I got to remember what I want most! Not what I want now!.

So here's my week!

Weekly Check In - July 27 - AKA - Bounce Back Week!!!!

Bounced back in a big way this week!!! Lost 8 pounds baby!  After a tough week last week I hit my calorie goals all but one day this last week, but Frank and Lola's was totally worth the cheat and you need that occasionally!!!  I am also getting very excited about school starting.  I am in a great new school building (well, new to me, the building has been around for over 100 years.) With a great new room.  It's so big I feel like I need to put a couple of goals at each end!

MY NEW SCHOOL BACK IN THE DAY!

I got some great training this week at our local Great Expectations training from two wonderful trainers (Thank you! Rhonda, Jentri (who is a finalist for Oklahoma State Teacher of the Year) and follow middle school campers for making the week GREAT.)

SOME OF MY FOLLOW GE CAMPERS

And thank you to my wonderful wife for allowing me to still get my workouts in AND time in my classroom.

Milestones:  I swam a mile Saturday with my face in the water all but the 50 meters of back stroke I would do at the end of each 350 meter set, and my last 800 was two minutes faster than my first 800. I also kept up with Renee for the most part in my 3rd 350 m set! Renee swims a lot and is sooooo smooth in the water. I want to be like her when I grow up (as a swimmer that is!) The life guard even commented that I looked much strong at the end! Also walked/ran a 5k on Friday and felt great after.  I starting to dig this exercise stuff more and more!!!

Weekly Check In - 7/6

Milestones this week:  Played basketball twice this week and didn't die, actually held my own.  Swims are feeling more productive, with the drills Mr. Kause has given me I am feeling these workouts more and my catch is sooooo much better.  Thank you Colton!!  I also made to through the holiday with no major binges.  Probably ate more than I needed but did not completely binge like I normally would have.

Realizations:  Dropped another notch in the belt this week.  Which surprised me when there was no loss on the scale, but I am feeling much stronger and one of the girls said something about my muscles the other day, so there may be some redistribution going on.  Not pinning everything on the scale, but I do like to see it go down.

Hope everyone had a great and safe Independence Day and I challenge everyone to try at least one new thing this week.

Here's my week!

Weekly Check In - June 29th

Milestones:  I am now lost 50+ pounds!!!!!!  I made to through a meal at Mazzio's sub 500 calories.  Had a sub 17 minute mile split mile on one of my walks.

Realizations:  I have dropped two pants sizes since starting and I am a better swimmer than I thought I was.  Big THANK YOU to Colton Krause All Metro Swimmer of the Year for taking time out of his busy schedule to work with an old guy just getting started.  The drills are all ready working.  I really felt that workout this morning.
